Phase 1: Reflect on Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge
What is my knowledge of technology (TK)? I would have to say that my knowledge of technology is moderate. I can proficiently use Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and I am familiar with search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and YouTube. I have used tutorials, drill and practice, and simulation software in the classroom. However, I feel that the knowledge I am lacking is in knowing what programs are out there besides the ones that I use in my classroom. I'm sure there are many more awesome tools just waiting to be discovered. I'm just not sure where to look.
What is my knowledge of pedagogy (PK)? Again, I would say that my knowledge of pedagogy is moderate. Because my undergraduate degree is in lab science, I have had limited education courses. However, I feel that the experiences I have gained in the classroom have helped me to understand what works and what doesn't when it comes to engaging and motivating my students.
What is my knowledge of the content (CK)? My content knowledge is high. I have a four year degree in laboratory science and know what my students need to learn. I have passed a certification exam to indicate that I am proficient in my subject area, am licensed to practice laboratory medicine in the state of ND, and maintain continuing education every year. Where do I see myself in the TPACK model? Even though my knowledge of technology and pedagogy are moderate, I feel that I am close to the center of the TPACK model. I feel that I have enough knowledge in all three areas to be able to effectively use technology in my classroom. Even so, there's always room for improvement, and I will continue to search for new ways to teach my students and new technological programs to use in the classroom.
